Indication

Sevoflurane is indicated for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia in adults and pediatric patients for inpatient and outpatient surgery.

Dosage

Premedication anesthesia

Premedication should be selected according to the needs of the individual patient and at the discretion of the anesthetist. The use of anticholinergic drugs is a matter of choice.

Induction

Sevoflurane has a nonpungent odor and does not cause respiratory irritability; it is suitable for mask induction in pediatrics and adults. Dosage should be individualized and titrated to the desired effect according to the patients age and clinical status. A short acting barbiturate or other intravenous induction agent may be administered followed by inhalation of isoflurane/sevoflurane.

Maintenance

Surgical levels of anesthesia can usually be achieved with concentrations of 0.5-3% sevoflurane with or without the concomitant use of nitrous oxide (N2O). Sevoflurane can be administered with any type of anesthesia circuit.
